The NCAA football champion has been decided via the College Football Playoffs since 2014. Below is a look at the last three national champions:

1. Alabama (2020) — The University of Alabama won the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship with a 52–24 victory over Ohio State on January 12, 2021. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith led the way offensively with three touchdown catches and 215 yards receiving. Head coach Nick Saban won his seventh championship and sixth with Alabama.

2. LSU (2019) — Quarterback Joe Burrow led LSU to its fourth national championship with a 42–25 victory over Clemson in January 2020. Burrow recorded five touchdown passes and 463 yards receiving on 31-of-49 passing. The Tigers rallied from a 17–7 second-quarter deficit to complete an undefeated 15–0 season.

3. Clemson (2018) — Freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence outperformed Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as Clemson defeated Alabama 44–16 to win the national championship in 2018. Lawrence finished the game with three touchdowns and 347 yards passing.
